Advanced Songwriting & Production Elevating your craft to professional-level mastery

Songwriting & Composition Division

Where great songs become exceptional ones — the intersection of advanced harmonic craft, production fluency, and professional songwriting careers.

Good songwriters write from instinct. Great songwriters write from instinct and mastery. This advanced certificate bridges the gap between talented hobbyist and working professional, equipping you with the harmonic sophistication, production integration skills, and industry knowledge that separate amateur demos from songs that get signed, placed, and performed worldwide.

Our Philosophy

The gap between a good song and a great song is rarely about talent — it's about craft at the highest level. Professional songwriters think differently. They hear harmonic possibilities that others miss, they understand how production choices shape emotional impact, and they know how to consistently deliver excellence under pressure.

This program exists at the intersection of advanced writing and modern production. We believe the best songs of the next decade will come from writers who are equally fluent in sophisticated harmony and production-based composition — who can write at a piano, in a DAW, or in a co-writing room with equal confidence and creative depth.

Focus Areas

Three Core Disciplines

Every module builds toward professional songwriting mastery across three interconnected skill domains that define the modern songwriter-producer.

🎵

Advanced Harmonic & Melodic Craft

Modal interchange, chromatic mediant relationships, advanced reharmonization, melodic counterpoint, and the harmonic vocabulary that separates amateur from professional writing.

🎧

Producer-Songwriter Integration

Writing in the DAW, production as composition, topline writing over tracks, arrangement as a songwriting tool, and bridging the gap between writer and producer roles.

💼

Professional Songwriting Career

Co-writing session dynamics, song camp culture, pitching to publishers and artists, sync placement strategy, and building a sustainable professional songwriting career.

Advanced harmonic techniques on piano

Core Skill

Advanced Harmony

Move beyond basic chord progressions into the sophisticated harmonic language used by the world's most successful songwriters. You'll master the techniques that create emotional depth, surprise, and sophistication — the difference between a song that sounds nice and one that stops listeners in their tracks.

  • Extended chords (9ths, 11ths, 13ths) and their voice-leading applications
  • Reharmonization techniques for transforming simple progressions
  • Borrowed chords and modal interchange for emotional color
  • Key modulation techniques — pivot chords, common-tone, and direct modulation
  • Chromatic mediant relationships and their use in modern pop and R&B

Harmony is the architecture of emotion. Build structures that move people.

Modern Craft

Writing in the DAW

The modern songwriter's instrument isn't just a guitar or piano — it's a digital audio workstation. Learn to compose production-first, where beat programming, sound design, and arrangement become integral parts of the songwriting process rather than afterthoughts.

  • Production-first songwriting — building songs from beats and textures up
  • Beat-based composition and rhythmic songwriting approaches
  • Toplining techniques — writing melodies and lyrics over existing productions
  • Arrangement as a writing tool — how drops, builds, and dynamics serve the song
  • Demo production that communicates your vision to artists and producers

The DAW is your collaborator. Learn its language and your songs gain a new dimension.

Co-writing session collaboration

Collaboration

Co-Writing Mastery

Almost every major hit today is co-written. Professional co-writing is a skill unto itself — requiring interpersonal intelligence, creative generosity, rapid ideation, and the ability to find chemistry with strangers in a three-hour session. This module makes you a sought-after collaborator.

  • Session dynamics — establishing creative flow with new collaborators
  • Role distribution — knowing when to lead, follow, or pivot
  • Remote collaboration tools and workflows for global co-writing
  • Song camp culture — high-pressure, high-output creative environments
  • Split sheet etiquette and credit negotiation

The best songs are conversations between brilliant minds. Become the writer everyone wants in the room.

Career Strategy

The Professional Songwriter

Writing great songs is only half the equation. The other half is understanding the business ecosystem that turns songs into income. Publishing deals, sync placements, artist development writing, and catalog building — this is the business of songwriting at the highest level.

  • Publishing deals — co-publishing, administration, and full publishing explained
  • Sync placements — writing for film, TV, advertising, and gaming
  • Artist development writing — crafting songs that define an artist's identity
  • Catalog building — creating a body of work that generates long-term royalties
  • The pitch process — getting songs heard by the right decision-makers

A career in songwriting is built one great song at a time. Know where each one belongs.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

This is an advanced program. You should have at least 2–3 years of active songwriting experience, a working knowledge of basic music theory (major/minor scales, diatonic chords, basic song structure), and a portfolio of completed songs. You don't need formal training, but you need demonstrated craft.
Yes. You should have at least basic proficiency on piano/keyboard or guitar, and familiarity with at least one DAW (Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, FL Studio, or similar). The production modules will deepen your DAW skills significantly, but you should not be starting from zero.
The program emphasizes genre versatility. While modules draw examples from pop, R&B, country, rock, and electronic music, the harmonic and melodic techniques taught are universal. You'll develop the ability to write convincingly across multiple styles — a requirement for professional songwriter careers.
Co-writing sessions happen live via video conference, mirroring real-world remote collaboration (which is increasingly common in the industry). You'll be paired with different cohort members throughout the program, plus participate in structured song camp simulations with time constraints and creative briefs.
The program gives you the skills and materials needed to pursue publishing deals — including a professional demo package, pitch-ready songs, and understanding of deal structures. Faculty guidance on industry relationships is included, but no program can guarantee a deal. What we guarantee is that you'll leave with material worthy of one.
Expect 10–12 hours per week including live sessions, writing assignments, co-writing sessions, production work, and independent study. This is an intensive advanced program — the time commitment reflects the professional-level outcomes.
All sessions are live with strict attendance. Co-writing can't happen asynchronously — presence and real-time creative exchange are essential to the learning model. No recordings are provided.
Yes. This certificate is stackable. Credits can apply toward the Professional Songwriter Diploma or the Music Industry Leadership certificate. Speak with admissions about credit pathways.
