Why This Division Exists

The performing arts industry has a structural problem. We built this division to fix it.

The Gap Between Training and Career

Every year, thousands of musicians complete world-class conservatory training and graduate into a market that has no place for them. Full-time orchestral positions number in the low hundreds globally. Solo careers require management connections that few graduates possess. Composition commissions go to established names. Conducting positions demand experience that emerging conductors have no way to obtain.

The result is a generation of extraordinarily talented musicians working outside their field—not because they lack ability, but because the pipeline from training to career is broken. Conservatories train musicians beautifully. They do not launch careers. That is the gap we exist to fill.

What Traditional Programs Miss

Summer festivals provide a few weeks of intensive experience. Competitions provide a single moment of evaluation. Masterclasses provide an hour of insight. None of these create sustained development over the months and years that career-building actually requires.

A conductor needs hundreds of hours on the podium with real ensembles to develop. A composer needs dozens of performances to refine their craft through hearing their work realized. A chamber ensemble needs years of touring to build an audience. Our programs provide the sustained engagement that one-off experiences cannot.

The Youth Development Crisis

School music programs are shrinking. Community ensembles are disappearing. The path from beginner to conservatory-ready musician used to run through robust youth orchestra, band, and choir programs that existed in most communities. That infrastructure is vanishing.

Our Global Youth Ensembles exist because exceptional young musicians in many parts of the world have nowhere to develop at a pre-professional level. Virtual rehearsals make geography irrelevant. Intensive residencies provide the immersive experience that builds excellence. We are building the youth development pipeline that communities can no longer sustain alone.

Our Approach: Systems, Not Events

We do not offer isolated experiences. Every program in this division is designed as a system—with intake, development, output, and follow-through. Fellowships are one to two years long because that is how long meaningful development takes. Youth ensembles run year-round because musicianship is built through sustained practice, not occasional participation.

Competitions include post-competition support because winning means nothing without the infrastructure to capitalize on it. Touring units provide ongoing management because one tour does not build a career. Every program answers the same question: what happens next? And every program has an answer.

Collaborative Touring Units

Chamber music careers do not happen by accident. They are built through sustained performance, audience development, and professional infrastructure. Our Collaborative Touring Units program takes small ensembles (2-8 musicians) and develops them into touring-ready professional groups with real bookings, professional materials, and career momentum.

Composer in Residence Fellowship

Composition is isolating work. The feedback loop from page to performance can take years. This fellowship changes that equation entirely—embedding emerging composers within a community of performers, conductors, and fellow composers who are actively invested in bringing their music to life. Not a prize you win and frame. A working residency where your music gets performed.

What You Receive:

  • Minimum three commissions with guaranteed premiere performances

Our Concerto Competition is designed to launch careers—not just recognize talent. Ages 14-22 — Coming 2030

Global Youth Big Band

The big band is one of music's most demanding and rewarding ensemble formats. Seventeen to twenty musicians creating a unified sound that swings, grooves, and electrifies. Our Youth Big Band trains serious young jazz musicians in the section discipline, improvisational vocabulary, and ensemble awareness that professional big band playing demands.

What Members Experience:

  • Weekly virtual sectional rehearsals (saxes, trumpets, trombones, rhythm section)
  • Monthly full ensemble virtual rehearsals with professional guest artists

The British brass band tradition produces some of the world's finest brass players. Our Youth Brass Band brings this tradition to a global stage—cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, and percussion creating a sound world unlike anything else in music. Precision, blend, and musical expression at the highest level.

What Members Experience:

  • Study of the brass band repertoire from classic test pieces to contemporary commissions

We create opportunity and support, but you must arrive prepared to work at a professional level. We accelerate careers; we do not replace foundational training.

The Application Process

Every program in this division is selective. Here is how the application process works across our programs.

Step 1: Review Program Requirements

Each program has specific eligibility criteria, repertoire requirements, and application materials. Read the program page carefully before applying. We are looking for artists who understand what they are applying to and why it matters for their development. Generic applications are obvious and rarely successful.

Step 2: Prepare Your Materials

Depending on the program, you may need recordings (audio and/or video), scores or portfolios, artistic statements, repertoire lists, or writing samples. Quality matters. A single well-prepared recording is worth more than a dozen rushed ones. Take time to present your best work—not your most work.

Step 3: Submit by Deadline

All deadlines are firm. Late applications are not reviewed regardless of circumstances. Plan ahead. Technical difficulties on the deadline day are not an excuse—submit early. Our annual calendar provides all dates; most programs follow predictable yearly cycles.

Step 4: Evaluation and Selection

Applications are reviewed by panels of working professionals—performers, conductors, and composers who understand what readiness looks like in practice, not just on paper. We evaluate artistic excellence, professional readiness, and potential for growth. For some programs, finalists are invited for interviews or live auditions.

Step 5: Notification

All applicants receive notification by the announced date. Accepted applicants receive detailed program information and onboarding materials. Rejected applicants may request brief feedback when time permits. Rejection is not the end—many successful participants applied more than once.

Youth Ensemble Auditions

Youth ensemble auditions follow a separate process. Auditions are conducted on a rolling basis, primarily during the fall. Each ensemble has specific audition requirements listed on its program page. Auditions may be submitted via video or conducted live, depending on the ensemble and the applicant's location.

Mentorship That Matters

Our mentors are working professionals—not retired professors reflecting on past careers, but active artists navigating the same industry our fellows are entering.

Every fellowship and ensemble in this division is led by faculty who are actively building the careers our participants aspire to. Conducting fellows work with conductors who hold music director positions. Composition fellows work with composers receiving regular commissions. Jazz fellows work with musicians who make their living performing and writing jazz. Youth ensemble directors are experienced educators who also maintain active performing careers.

This is not accidental. It is foundational. Mentorship from someone who last performed professionally twenty years ago is fundamentally different from mentorship from someone who performed last week. Both have value; only one provides current industry intelligence, active professional networks, and the credibility of present-tense success.

Beyond Traditional Training

Conservatory Training

Conservatories and university music programs provide foundational training—technique, theory, history, and repertoire development over four to seven years. This training is essential. No serious musician should skip it. But conservatory training is designed to develop your abilities, not to launch your career. Graduation marks the end of structured development and the beginning of an unstructured market.

This Division

Our programs pick up where conservatory training leaves off—or run parallel to it. Fellowships provide the sustained professional development that follows education. Competitions provide the visibility that opens doors. Touring units provide the performance infrastructure that careers require. Youth ensembles provide the pre-professional foundation that makes conservatory admission possible and meaningful.

Summer festivals provide intensive short-term experience—typically two to eight weeks of concentrated rehearsals, masterclasses, and performances. Valuable, but limited by duration. You cannot build a career in six weeks. You cannot develop a conducting technique in three weeks of podium time. You cannot complete a musical theater work in one summer.

Our Difference

We provide what festivals cannot: sustained engagement over months and years. Our fellowships run one to two years. Our youth ensembles run year-round. Our touring partnerships are ongoing. We are not an experience you have once and remember fondly. We are a system you enter and emerge from transformed—with a career trajectory fundamentally different from the one you arrived with.

Very competitive. Our fellowships receive hundreds of applications for limited positions. Acceptance rates vary by program but typically range from 5-15%. We select based on artistic excellence, professional readiness, and potential for career development. The application process includes recordings, writing samples or scores, and interviews. We're looking for artists who are ready—not just talented, but prepared to take advantage of what we offer.

Youth ensemble admission is by audition only. We evaluate musicianship, technical ability, and commitment to excellence. Auditions take place on a rolling basis through the fall for each academic year. Submit your audition materials through the program page for the specific ensemble you're interested in. No prior professional experience is required—just serious dedication and the ability to perform at a pre-professional level.

Generally ages 12-22, though specific ensembles have different ranges based on repertoire demands and developmental appropriateness. Big Band, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band serve ages 14-22. Brass Band and Youth Choir serve ages 12-22. Exceptional younger musicians may be considered by audition in specific circumstances.

Yes, if you're genuinely qualified for each. However, applying to everything reduces your credibility. A composer might reasonably apply to both Composer in Residence and Young Composer Prize. A conductor and composer might apply to Conducting Fellowship and Young Composer Prize. But applying to Conducting Fellowship and Jazz Composition Fellowship suggests unclear direction. Be strategic.

Apply again. Most successful applicants to competitive programs applied more than once. Rejection is information—use it. Request feedback when available. Improve. Reapply. Persistence is part of every successful music career. Rejection from one program doesn't disqualify you from others.

Locations for all programs are currently being determined. We are evaluating sites globally that provide appropriate rehearsal, performance, and housing facilities. Some programs will be primarily virtual with in-person intensive periods. Others will require physical residency. Location announcements will be made as we approach 2030 launch. Virtual rehearsals use high-quality audio and video platforms designed for musical collaboration. Sectional rehearsals, coaching sessions, masterclasses, and some full ensemble work happens online throughout the academic year. This model allows participation from anywhere in the world. In-person residencies complement the virtual program with intensive, immersive experiences that only physical proximity provides.

Each ensemble has specific instrumentation. Big Band: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums. Brass Band: cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, percussion. Marching Band: all wind and percussion instruments. The Performance and Fellowships Division is one of several divisions within The Global Conservatory. Each division addresses different aspects of music education, development, and career launch.
