Ableton LiveProduction

Music Production & Technology · Intermediate Program

Master the most creative DAW in modern music — from Session View to the stage.

The Certificate in Ableton Live Production at The Global Conservatory is designed for producers, beatmakers, electronic artists, and performers who want deep command of Ableton Live. This is not a surface overview. You will master Session View, Arrangement View, Max for Live, Push integration, sound design with native instruments, and live electronic performance workflows.

Ableton Live is the creative engine behind electronic music, hip-hop production, sound art, film scoring, and DJ-hybrid performance. This certificate teaches you to think in clips, perform in real time, design sounds from scratch, and finish professional-quality tracks entirely within Live — the way the world's most innovative producers work.

Why Ableton Live

Ableton Live is not just a DAW — it is a creative instrument. Its Session View invented a new way of making music: non-linear, improvisational, and performance-ready from the first clip. No other software bridges the studio and the stage with such fluidity.

From Bonobo's layered textures to Four Tet's modular explorations to Flume's genre-bending productions, the artists who define electronic music's future build their worlds inside Live. This certificate teaches you to think the way Live thinks — in clips, in scenes, in real-time transformation.

We don't teach you to replicate tutorials. We teach you to develop your own creative workflow, build custom instruments, and perform your productions live. Every session is hands-on. Every project is portfolio-ready.

Focus Areas

Three Creative Disciplines

Every module builds toward complete Ableton Live mastery across three interconnected creative domains.

🎵

Creative Production

Session View workflows, clip launching, scene management, and improvisational composition techniques that make Live unique among DAWs.

🔊

Sound Design & Instruments

Wavetable, Operator, Simpler, Sampler, Drift, and Max for Live — build original sounds and custom instruments from the ground up.

🎤

Live Performance

Build performance-ready sets, master Push controller integration, design DJ-hybrid workflows, and learn to perform your productions on stage.

Session View production workflow

Core Workflow

Session View Mastery

Session View is what makes Ableton Live fundamentally different from every other DAW. It is non-linear, improvisational, and performance-oriented. You will learn to think in clips rather than timelines — launching, layering, and transforming musical ideas in real time.

This module covers everything from clip launching and scene management to follow actions, dummy clips, and MIDI mapping for hands-free control. You will build entire compositions by performing them live in Session View before ever touching the Arrangement.

  • Non-linear clip-based composition and arrangement
  • Scene launching, follow actions, and legato modes
  • MIDI and key mapping for hands-free performance
  • Improvisational workflow and creative constraints

Think in clips. Perform your ideas. Discover music through exploration.

Finishing Tracks

Arrangement & Finishing

Ideas born in Session View need structure to become finished tracks. This module teaches you to move seamlessly from Session to Arrangement View — building intros, breakdowns, builds, and drops with intention and precision.

You will learn Ableton's powerful automation system, mixing workflows native to Live, sidechain compression techniques, and the art of finishing tracks. Most producers start dozens of ideas but finish few. This module fixes that.

  • Session-to-Arrangement workflow and consolidation
  • Automation lanes, breakpoint editing, and modulation
  • Mixing in Live: EQ Eight, Compressor, Glue, Utility
  • Track finishing strategies and export best practices

Start with an idea. Finish with a release-ready track.

Max for Live custom devices and Push controller

Advanced Tools

Max for Live & Push

Max for Live transforms Ableton from a DAW into an open-ended creative platform. You will learn to build custom audio effects, MIDI devices, generative sequencers, and interactive instruments that extend Live's capabilities far beyond its factory features.

Push turns Live into a standalone instrument. This module covers deep Push integration — from melodic step sequencing and drum programming to parameter control and live recording. You will develop a tactile, hands-on production workflow that frees you from the screen.

  • Max for Live: building audio effects and MIDI devices
  • Generative tools, LFOs, and algorithmic sequencers
  • Push controller: step sequencing, melodic input, mixing
  • Tactile production workflows and screenless creation

Build the tools that don't exist yet. Play your productions by hand.

Stage & Career

Career & Performance

Technical mastery means nothing without a path to apply it. This module bridges the studio and the stage — teaching you to build live electronic performance sets, DJ-hybrid workflows, sync licensing strategies, and streaming production techniques.

You will learn how to prepare a live set from scratch, manage real-time transitions between songs, incorporate external controllers and hardware, and present yourself as a performing electronic artist in club, festival, and streaming contexts.

  • Live electronic performance set design and rehearsal
  • DJ-hybrid workflows: mixing and live remixing in real time
  • Sync licensing and library music production in Ableton
  • Streaming production: OBS integration, Twitch, YouTube Live

From the bedroom to the festival stage — perform what you produce.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

This is an intermediate-level certificate. You should have basic familiarity with Ableton Live — creating tracks, using clips, and navigating the interface. If you're a complete beginner, consider starting with our Music Production Fundamentals certificate first.
Ableton Live Suite is recommended because it includes Max for Live and the full instrument library. Live Standard will work for most modules, but you will need Max for Live access (available as an add-on) for the Max for Live programming module.
A Push controller is strongly recommended but not strictly required. The Push module can be adapted for other MIDI controllers. However, Push provides the deepest integration with Live and is the focus of the tactile production workflow module.
Plan for 6–8 hours per week, including live sessions, production assignments, sound design exercises, and independent project work. Some weeks during the capstone phase may require additional time.
Yes. The Max for Live module starts with the fundamentals of the Max environment and progresses to building functional audio effects, MIDI tools, and generative devices. Your capstone includes at least one original Max for Live device.
The techniques are genre-agnostic, but your capstone projects can be in any genre you choose. Whether you produce techno, ambient, hip-hop, experimental, or pop — the Ableton Live workflows apply universally. Faculty will guide you toward genre-specific techniques during project work.
Yes. One of your capstone deliverables is a 20–30 minute live performance set built and rehearsed in Ableton Live. You will present this set to faculty and peers as part of your final review.
Yes. This certificate is stackable. Credits can apply toward the Electronic Music Production certificate, the Audio Engineering & Sound Design certificate, or the AI & Music Technology certificate.
Electronic Music Producer, Live Performer, Sound Designer, Max for Live Developer, Remix Artist, DJ-Producer, Sync Licensing Composer, Beat Producer, Streaming Content Creator, and Music Technology Educator.
New cohorts begin quarterly. Submit the enrollment form below to receive information about the next available start date and reserve your spot.
