About the Competition

Celebrating the art of songwriting across all genres. Pop, rock, R&B, country, folk, jazz, musical theater, hip-hop — if it has lyrics and melody, it belongs here.

Open to solo writers and co-writing teams from anywhere in the world. No age restrictions. No genre boundaries. Just great songs.

Judged on originality, lyrical craft, melodic strength, and emotional impact. Our jury evaluates the song itself — not the production value, not the performance, not the budget behind it. A voice memo that gives you chills will always beat a polished track that leaves you cold.
Competition Categories

Four Categories, Infinite Possibilities

Submit your work in the category that best fits your song. Each category has its own winner and prize, plus all category entries compete for the Grand Prize.

Contemporary Pop, Rock & R&B

Chart-ready songs that push boundaries. Whether you're writing the next festival anthem or a late-night R&B slow burn, this is your category.

Demo + Lyric Sheet

Acoustic, Folk & Country

Songs that live in the bones of an acoustic guitar or piano. Stories that breathe. From Appalachian folk to modern country to singer-songwriter intimacy.

Demo + Lyric Sheet

Musical Theater & Jazz Standards

Songs written for the stage, the cabaret, or the jazz club. Character-driven storytelling, sophisticated harmony, theatrical flair. Classic forms, fresh voices.

Demo + Lyric Sheet + Context Note

Open & Experimental

For songs that defy categorization. Electronic, hybrid, spoken word with melody, genre-blending work — if it doesn't fit neatly elsewhere, it fits perfectly here.

What to Submit

Everything We Need to Hear

We judge the song, not the studio. Home recordings, phone demos, and bedroom productions are all welcome. Clarity matters more than polish.

  • Demo Recording — Audio file (MP3 or WAV) of your song. Home studio quality is absolutely accepted. We want to hear the song, not the mix. Vocals must be clearly audible.
  • Lyric Sheet — Complete lyrics in a readable format (PDF or document). Include verse, chorus, and bridge labels. If the song uses non-English lyrics, provide a translation.
  • Brief Artist Statement — Tell us about the song in 150 words or fewer. What inspired it? What were you reaching for? This helps our jury understand your creative intent.
  • Co-Writer Credits — If your song was co-written, list all writers and their contributions. All co-writers must consent to the submission. One writer submits on behalf of the team.
  • Original Works Only — All submissions must be original compositions. No covers, no interpolations of copyrighted material. Samples must be cleared or original.

Detailed submission guidelines and technical specifications will be published when registration opens in February 2027.

Our Mission

Every Song Deserves to Be Heard

The music industry has always favored songwriters with connections — those who happen to know the right publisher, the right A&R rep, the right producer. Talent alone has never been enough to open doors.

The TGC Songwriting Competition exists to change that equation. We believe a brilliant song written in a bedroom in Lagos deserves the same chance as one pitched from a Nashville writing room. Geography, budget, and industry access should never determine whether a great song finds its audience.

By bringing internationally accomplished adjudication online and connecting winners directly with sync supervisors, publishers, and recording opportunities, we're building the bridge that should have existed all along.

Great songs don't need permission. They just need a platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know

No. All submissions must be original compositions. Cover songs, arrangements of copyrighted material, and interpolations are not accepted. Your lyrics, your melody, your song. If you've sampled another work, the sample must be cleared and documented.
Absolutely not. We judge the song, not the production. A clear phone recording, a simple guitar-and-voice demo, or a basic home studio track is perfectly acceptable. The only requirement is that vocals and lyrics are clearly audible. Some of the greatest songs ever written were demoed on a cassette recorder.
Yes. We welcome submissions in any language. Please include an English translation of the lyrics along with the original text so our jury can fully evaluate the lyrical content. Great songwriting transcends language, and we want to hear voices from every corner of the world.
Yes, co-writes are absolutely welcome. One writer must serve as the primary contact and submit on behalf of the team. All co-writers must be listed and must consent to the submission. If the song wins a prize, the prize money and opportunities will be shared among all credited writers as they determine.
There is no age restriction for the TGC Songwriting Competition. Songwriters of all ages are welcome. Participants under 18 will need parental or guardian consent to register and participate.
Yes. You may submit up to three songs, and they can be in different categories. Each submission is evaluated independently by the jury. There is a separate entry fee for each submission.
You retain full ownership and copyright of your work. By entering, you grant TGC a non-exclusive license to stream and promote your song in connection with the competition, including the Virtual Showcase and the TGC Songwriters Playlist. You are free to release, license, or publish your song at any time.
Semifinalists perform their songs live in a virtual concert format, streamed to a global audience. You can perform from wherever you are — your living room, your studio, your favorite coffee shop. The Virtual Showcase is where the People's Choice award is decided through live audience voting.
The Grand Prize winner receives direct introductions to sync supervisors who place music in film, television, advertising, and video games. This includes mentorship sessions on how to prepare your catalog for sync, guidance on publishing, and ongoing consideration for placement opportunities through TGC's industry network.
Entry fee details will be announced when submissions open in February 2027. TGC is committed to keeping fees accessible. A limited number of fee waivers will be available for songwriters who demonstrate financial need, because a great song should never go unheard for economic reasons.
