How online music lessons work — student practising at home

Student Journey · Step by Step

From browsing the faculty roster to your first lesson and beyond — here's exactly what happens, in what order, and how long each step takes. We've designed the journey so the only thing you have to think about is the music.

The full student journey

01

Browse and choose your faculty

Visit Faculty A–Z to view our 69 founding faculty members across 14 instrument families and 10 academic divisions. Filter by instrument, country, time zone, or specialty. Each faculty profile includes a bio, credentials, lesson formats, rates, and (where available) recorded performance samples. If you'd prefer guidance, email info@theglobalconservatory.com with your level, goals, and time-zone availability — we'll suggest two or three matched faculty options within 5 business days.

Time: 15–30 minutes browsing, or 5 business days for an admissions match.

02

Book a trial lesson (recommended)

Most faculty offer a 30-minute trial lesson before you commit to regular study. A trial lets you and the faculty member confirm the fit — pedagogical style, audio quality, time-zone alignment, and chemistry — before booking ongoing lessons. Trial lessons are eligible for a full refund if cancelled before the lesson begins.

Time: 30 minutes for the lesson; book at least 2–3 days ahead to give the faculty member time to prepare for you.

03

Set your schedule and pay

Once you've chosen a faculty member, you book sessions through their faculty page. Lessons are paid at the time of booking via secure online payment (major credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal in supported jurisdictions). Faculty publish their own rates — visible before you book, with platform fees included rather than added on top. Multi-session packages (4, 8, 12, 16 lessons) are commonly available at a small discount.

Time: 5 minutes to book; receipts are issued automatically.

04

Receive your faculty introduction

Within 24 hours of confirmed booking, you receive an order confirmation by email. Your faculty member receives your contact information and any intake notes you provided. The faculty member contacts you to confirm scheduling and answer any pre-lesson questions. You receive a Zoom link (or alternative platform link, per your faculty's preference) ahead of the first session.

Time: Within 24 hours of booking.

05

Take the lesson

Your lesson runs live via Zoom (or alternative video platform). Most TGC lessons are 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes. Your faculty member guides the session, but the most productive lessons are conversations: bring your questions, your practice recordings, your repertoire interests, and your honest sense of what is working and not working. Faculty mix demonstration, dialogue, and student exploration — not one-directional lecturing.

Time: Per your booked session length.

06

Receive your lesson notes

Within 48 hours, your faculty member submits a brief lesson note via the TGC platform. The note includes the material covered, two or three specific takeaways for you to focus on, and a practice assignment for the coming week. Lesson notes accumulate as your TGC academic record — useful for tracking progress and (for credential pathways) for assessment.

Time: Within 48 hours of every lesson.

07

Practice between sessions

Lessons accelerate the work; practice does the work. Faculty assign concrete weekly practice based on your level and goals — typically 30 minutes/day for casual hobbyists, 60–120 minutes/day for serious amateurs, 2–4 hours/day for pre-professional students, and 4–6 hours/day for audition or competition preparation. Your faculty calibrates to your reality. Most progress fails not from talent or technique but from inadequate or unfocused practice between sessions.

Time: Daily commitment; volume calibrated to your goals by your faculty member.

08

Periodic review of your trajectory

Every 8–10 weeks, your faculty member steps back to assess your trajectory: are you progressing toward the goals stated at intake? Are the goals still the right goals? What has changed in your life or musical context? What does the next 8–10 weeks need to look like? This review is captured in your record and discussed openly in a regular session.

Time: A 5–10 minute discussion within a regular lesson, every 8–10 weeks.

What makes TGC different

  • Live, vetted faculty. Working performers, scholars, and pedagogues — not pre-recorded courses, not anonymous teachers. Browse the public roster.
  • 14 countries, every time zone. Faculty from 14 countries across four continents, so we can match you to a teacher whose schedule aligns naturally with yours.
  • All levels welcome. From absolute beginners to professional musicians. Adult learners, pre-college teenagers, and young children (with parental enrolment) are equally part of the community.
  • 10 academic divisions. Performance & Vocal, Opera & Vocal Arts, World Music, NextGen Music & AI, Health & Wellness, Pedagogy Institute, Orchestral Training, Degree Track (2028), Ballet & Dance (2027), Drama & Theatre (2027).
  • 78 certificate programmes. Foundational, standard, advanced, and intensive certificates across all ten divisions.
  • The Global Stage. Performance opportunities, competitions, and masterclasses with renowned guest artists.
  • Trust & safety. Comprehensive safeguarding policies for students under 18, including parent observation, recording, and a dedicated safeguarding officer.

Scheduling, rescheduling, and cancellation

  • Reschedule at least 24 hours in advance: free, no penalty
  • Reschedule within 24 hours: at the faculty member's discretion (typically one accommodated per term)
  • If your faculty member cancels with less than 24 hours' notice, you receive a full credit toward future sessions
  • Cancellation at least 48 hours in advance of a single-session booking: full refund
  • Long-term breaks (vacation, illness, military service, family circumstances) are accommodated with reasonable flexibility

Full details on our Refund & Cancellation Policy page.

Equipment and environment

  • A reliable internet connection — wired ethernet preferred where available
  • A device with a working camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or desktop)
  • The Zoom client (free) or alternative platform per your faculty's preference
  • A quiet space free of interruptions for the duration of the lesson
  • For piano/keyboard students: an acoustic piano or weighted-key digital keyboard is strongly preferred

For audio quality specifically — which matters more on a music lesson than video quality — our Zoom Audio Settings guide walks through the right configuration.
