TGC CompositionPrize

Amplifying the voices of tomorrow’s composers

The TGC Composition Prize is a new international competition dedicated to discovering bold, original compositional voices from every corner of the globe. Whether you write for concert hall, screen, stage, or speaker — if your music has something to say, we want to hear it.

Open to composers of all styles and backgrounds, the Prize champions artistic vision, technical craft, and the courage to push boundaries. No conservatory pedigree required. No aesthetic gatekeeping. Just the power of the music on the page.

Our Mission

The world is full of composers whose music deserves to be heard — but who lack the connections, the geography, or the institutional backing to break through.

The TGC Composition Prize exists to change that equation. Through blind adjudication and an entirely online process, we remove every barrier between a composer and a fair hearing. Your score speaks for itself.

Open to all idioms — classical, jazz, electronic, film and media scoring, experimental, and everything in between. We believe the next great compositional voices will emerge from places and perspectives the traditional competition circuit has never reached.

Three Categories

One Prize. Every Voice.

Submit in the category that best represents your compositional practice. Each category is judged independently by specialists, with one Grand Prize awarded across all three.

Concert Music

Acoustic works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, or orchestra. This category celebrates the craft of writing for live performers in a concert setting — from intimate duos to large-scale orchestral works.

  • Duration: 5–15 minutes
  • Any acoustic instrumentation
  • Full score required (PDF)
  • Audio mockup or live recording
  • Parts not required at submission

Media Composition

Music composed for film, television, video games, commercial media, or any visual storytelling format. Entrants may submit original scores composed to picture, or standalone works conceived for a media context.

  • Duration: 3–15 minutes total
  • Submit as audio or video file
  • Score or lead sheet encouraged
  • Brief context statement required
  • May include multiple short cues

Experimental & Electronic

Works that employ technology as a primary compositional tool — from fixed media and live electronics to algorithmic composition, sound installations, and audio-visual works. No format restrictions.

  • Duration: 3–20 minutes
  • Any format using technology
  • Audio/video file required
  • Technical rider or description
  • Score or graphic notation if applicable

The Jury

Internationally Acclaimed Composition Jury

Our jury will comprise leading figures in contemporary composition — Pulitzer Prize and Grammy-winning composers, celebrated film and game scoring artists, and composition department chairs from the world’s most prestigious conservatories. Each juror brings deep expertise in their category and a shared commitment to discovering original voices regardless of background or geography.

All first-round adjudication is conducted blind. Jurors evaluate scores and recordings without knowledge of the composer’s name, nationality, age, or institutional affiliation.

Submission Requirements

What to Submit

Prepare your materials carefully. Complete submissions strengthen your candidacy and help jurors engage deeply with your work.

Score

A complete, legibly notated score in PDF format. For electronic and experimental works without traditional notation, submit a graphic score, technical diagram, or detailed written description of the work’s structure.

  • PDF format, max 50MB
  • Transposed or concert pitch accepted
  • Include instrumentation on title page
  • Remove composer name from all pages (blind review)

Audio Recording or Mockup

A high-quality audio file demonstrating the work as fully as possible. Live recordings, studio recordings, and MIDI mockups are all accepted. For media compositions, video with synchronized audio is preferred.

  • WAV, AIFF, or high-bitrate MP3
  • Video accepted for Media category (MP4)
  • Maximum 500MB per file
  • Reasonable audio quality expected, not studio polish

Program Notes

A written statement (250–500 words) describing the work’s concept, inspiration, structure, and any relevant context. This helps jurors understand your artistic intentions and evaluate the work on its own terms.

  • 250–500 words
  • Describe concept and structure
  • Note any special techniques or technology
  • May be in English or with English translation

Composer Bio

A brief biography (100–200 words) for use in concert programs and publications if your work is selected. This is collected separately from the blind review materials and will not be shared with jurors during adjudication.

  • 100–200 words
  • Professional or artistic biography
  • Not shared during blind review
  • Used for publicity if selected

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

The competition is open to composers of any age, nationality, and educational background. There are no degree requirements or institutional affiliations needed. You must be the sole composer of the submitted work, and the work must not have been previously awarded a prize in another competition. Student composers, emerging professionals, and established artists are all welcome.
Entry fee details will be announced when registration formally opens in February 2027. TGC is committed to keeping the fee as low as possible to reduce barriers to entry, and fee waivers will be available for composers who demonstrate financial need. Register your interest now to receive early-bird pricing when it becomes available.
Yes. You may submit one work per category, for a maximum of three submissions. Each submission is judged independently by the jury panel for that category. A separate entry fee applies to each submission. The same work may not be entered in more than one category.
All first-round judging is conducted without any identifying information. Jurors receive only the score, audio recording, and program notes — never the composer’s name, photo, nationality, or educational background. This ensures every work is evaluated purely on its musical and artistic merits. Composer identities are revealed only after semifinalists have been selected.
No. We accept MIDI mockups, software instrument renderings, and amateur live recordings alongside professional studio recordings. Jurors are experienced at evaluating compositional merit regardless of recording quality. That said, a clear and well-prepared audio representation of your work will always serve you better than a hasty one. Do the best you can with what you have.
Yes. Works that have been performed, recorded, or published may be submitted, provided they have not won a prize in another composition competition. The work must be your original composition, and you must hold the rights to submit it.
Finalist works in the Concert Music and Media Composition categories are performed by professional musicians and recorded for the livestreamed premiere event. Experimental & Electronic works are presented in their original format. The concert is free to watch worldwide and includes brief composer introductions. The Audience Choice Award is determined by viewer votes cast during the event.
Yes. Every entrant receives a written evaluation from the jury following the announcement of semifinalists. Feedback addresses compositional craft, originality, orchestration or sound design, and overall artistic impact. This is one of the most valued aspects of the competition — constructive, expert-level feedback is rare in the composition world.
Program notes and composer bios should be submitted in English or with an English translation. Scores may use standard musical notation in any language, and text in vocal works may be in any language (provide a translation in the program notes). The submission portal and all communications are in English.
Register your interest using the form below. You will receive email updates when registration opens, when jury members are announced, and when any competition guidelines are finalized. You can also follow The Global Conservatory on social media for the latest news. We anticipate opening full registration in February 2027.
