Our Mission

The TGC Teaching Artist Fellowship prepares exceptional musicians to bring transformative music education to underserved communities worldwide.

Fellows develop pedagogy skills, cultural competency, and creative teaching practices while making a real impact through virtual teaching placements in schools, community centers, and organizations that lack access to quality music instruction.

Inspired by the pioneering teaching artist fellowship programs at the world’s leading conservatories, the TGC fellowship bridges the gap between elite musical training and the communities that need it most — proving that great performance and great teaching are inseparable.

What Fellows Do

Four Pillars of the Fellowship

Teaching Artist Fellows engage in a balanced program of teaching, learning, creating, and performing — building the complete skill set of a 21st-century teaching artist.

🏫

Teach

10–15 hours / week

Lead music instruction at placement sites — from individual lessons to group classes, ensemble coaching, and creative workshops. Develop the classroom presence and pedagogical flexibility that defines a great teaching artist.

📚

Learn

Weekly Seminars

Participate in weekly pedagogy seminars, workshops, and mentored peer observations. Study the art of teaching through evidence-based methods, reflective practice, and exposure to diverse educational philosophies.

📝

Create

Ongoing Projects

Develop original curriculum materials, lesson plans, and teaching resources tailored to the communities you serve. Your creative work becomes part of a growing library that benefits future fellows and their students.

🎸

Perform

Community Concerts

Share your artistry through community concerts, showcase events, and collaborative performances with fellow teaching artists. Demonstrate that performance and pedagogy are not separate paths, but one integrated practice.

Program Structure

12 Months That Transform Your Teaching

The fellowship unfolds in three distinct phases, each building on the last to develop confident, creative, and deeply prepared teaching artists.

Phase One
Months 1–2

Orientation & Training

An immersive introduction to the art and practice of teaching artistry. Fellows develop their teaching philosophy, study pedagogy fundamentals, build cultural competency, and prepare for their placement communities. Intensive workshops, peer bonding, and mentorship pairings set the foundation for everything that follows.

Pedagogy Intensive Cultural Competency Teaching Philosophy Mentor Pairing Site Orientation
Phase Two
Months 3–10

Active Placement

The heart of the fellowship. Fellows teach 10–15 hours per week at their assigned partner sites, participate in weekly seminars, observe and be observed by peers, and meet regularly with their mentors. This phase is where classroom skills sharpen, relationships deepen, and the full impact of teaching artistry becomes real.

Weekly Teaching Monthly Seminars Peer Observation Curriculum Design Mentor Check-ins
Phase Three
Months 11–12

Capstone & Completion

Fellows bring their year together with a capstone teaching project, a comprehensive teaching portfolio documenting their growth and methods, and a showcase concert celebrating the community partnerships built during their placements. This phase prepares fellows for career placement and ongoing teaching artist work.

Teaching Is Performing

The best teaching artists bring the same creativity, presence, and communication to the classroom that they bring to the stage. A great lesson is a performance — it requires timing, responsiveness, emotional intelligence, and the ability to hold a room.

The TGC Teaching Artist Fellowship doesn’t ask you to choose between performing and teaching. It trains you to understand that they are the same craft, expressed in different contexts — and that both are essential to a complete musical life.
