Development
The TGC Teaching Artist Fellowship prepares exceptional musicians to bring transformative music education to underserved communities worldwide.
Fellows develop pedagogy skills, cultural competency, and creative teaching practices while making a real impact through virtual teaching placements in schools, community centers, and organizations that lack access to quality music instruction.
Inspired by the pioneering teaching artist fellowship programs at the world’s leading conservatories, the TGC fellowship bridges the gap between elite musical training and the communities that need it most — proving that great performance and great teaching are inseparable.
Four Pillars of the Fellowship
Teaching Artist Fellows engage in a balanced program of teaching, learning, creating, and performing — building the complete skill set of a 21st-century teaching artist.
Teach
Lead music instruction at placement sites — from individual lessons to group classes, ensemble coaching, and creative workshops. Develop the classroom presence and pedagogical flexibility that defines a great teaching artist.
Learn
Participate in weekly pedagogy seminars, workshops, and mentored peer observations. Study the art of teaching through evidence-based methods, reflective practice, and exposure to diverse educational philosophies.
Create
Develop original curriculum materials, lesson plans, and teaching resources tailored to the communities you serve. Your creative work becomes part of a growing library that benefits future fellows and their students.
Perform
Share your artistry through community concerts, showcase events, and collaborative performances with fellow teaching artists. Demonstrate that performance and pedagogy are not separate paths, but one integrated practice.
12 Months That Transform Your Teaching
The fellowship unfolds in three distinct phases, each building on the last to develop confident, creative, and deeply prepared teaching artists.
Orientation & Training
An immersive introduction to the art and practice of teaching artistry. Fellows develop their teaching philosophy, study pedagogy fundamentals, build cultural competency, and prepare for their placement communities. Intensive workshops, peer bonding, and mentorship pairings set the foundation for everything that follows.
Active Placement
The heart of the fellowship. Fellows teach 10–15 hours per week at their assigned partner sites, participate in weekly seminars, observe and be observed by peers, and meet regularly with their mentors. This phase is where classroom skills sharpen, relationships deepen, and the full impact of teaching artistry becomes real.
Capstone & Completion
Fellows bring their year together with a capstone teaching project, a comprehensive teaching portfolio documenting their growth and methods, and a showcase concert celebrating the community partnerships built during their placements. This phase prepares fellows for career placement and ongoing teaching artist work.
Teaching Is Performing
The best teaching artists bring the same creativity, presence, and communication to the classroom that they bring to the stage. A great lesson is a performance — it requires timing, responsiveness, emotional intelligence, and the ability to hold a room.
The TGC Teaching Artist Fellowship doesn’t ask you to choose between performing and teaching. It trains you to understand that they are the same craft, expressed in different contexts — and that both are essential to a complete musical life.
Apply to the FellowshipSupport for Your Growth
The fellowship is designed to remove barriers and provide everything you need to focus fully on developing as a teaching artist and making an impact in your placement community.
Monthly Stipend
A competitive monthly stipend allows fellows to focus on teaching and professional development without the financial stress that undermines so many early-career musicians.
Professional Development
Comprehensive pedagogy training, classroom management skills, cultural competency workshops, and reflective teaching practices developed through weekly seminars and mentored experience.
Teaching Materials Budget
A dedicated budget for teaching materials, instruments, technology, and supplies ensures that fellows have the resources to deliver engaging, high-quality instruction at every placement site.
Mentorship
Each fellow is paired with an experienced teaching artist mentor for the duration of the program. Mentors provide guidance, feedback, and the wisdom that comes from years in the classroom.
Certificate of Completion
Upon completing the fellowship, fellows receive a formal Certificate of Teaching Artistry from TGC — a credential recognized by schools, arts organizations, and employers worldwide.
Career Placement Support
The fellowship doesn’t end at graduation. Our career team helps fellows find teaching positions, arts organization roles, community program leadership, and other opportunities that match their skills and passions.
