About the Competition

Celebrating the most intimate form of ensemble music-making. Chamber music is where musicians learn to listen as intently as they play — where the conversation between instruments becomes the performance itself.

Open to ensembles of two to eight players. Standard and non-traditional instrumentation welcome. We value communication, balance, shared interpretation, and musical risk-taking.

The greatest chamber music happens when individual artistry serves a collective vision. Our jury listens for ensembles that breathe together, think together, and dare together — groups that make you forget they are separate musicians playing separate parts.
Ensemble Categories

Every Ensemble Size, Every Voice Heard

Three categories organized by ensemble size. Mixed instrumentation is encouraged. Both standard and contemporary repertoire are welcome in every category.

Duos & Trios

The most exposed form of chamber music. Every note carries weight, every silence speaks. Violin-piano duos, wind trios, string trios, and any combination of two or three instruments.

2–3 Players

Quartets & Quintets

The heart of the chamber music tradition. String quartets, piano quintets, wind quintets, brass quartets, and every non-standard combination. The sweet spot where complexity and intimacy meet.

4–5 Players

Large Ensembles

Sextets, septets, and octets — where chamber music begins to approach orchestral color while retaining its intimate character. The challenge of collective leadership at its most complex.

6–8 Players
What to Submit

Show Us How You Play Together

We want to hear your ensemble at its best — unedited, unprocessed, and unmistakably together. Authenticity over production value.

  • Unedited Video Recording — A single continuous take from a single camera angle. No cuts, no audio edits, no post-production. We want to see and hear the ensemble as it truly performs. All players must be visible.
  • Two Contrasting Works — Submit performances of two pieces totaling 20–40 minutes of music. The works should demonstrate range and versatility. At least one work from the standard repertoire and one contrasting piece (different era, style, or character).
  • Ensemble Biography — Tell us your story as a group. How did you form? What draws you to chamber music? What do you aspire to? Keep it under 300 words.
  • Individual Member Bios — Brief biographies for each member of the ensemble (100 words each), including current studies or professional affiliations and instrument played.

Detailed submission guidelines, video specifications, and repertoire suggestions will be published when registration opens in January 2027.

What We Listen For

What Makes Great Chamber Music

Our jury evaluates far more than technical perfection. These are the qualities that separate good ensembles from unforgettable ones.

Active Listening

The ability to hear and respond to your partners in real time. Great chamber music is a conversation, not a series of solos. We listen for ensembles that react, adjust, and breathe as a single organism.

Shared Leadership

The musical lead passes seamlessly between players. No one dominates, no one disappears. Every member of the ensemble takes responsibility for shaping the music, phrase by phrase.

Unified Interpretation

A clear, shared vision of the music that goes beyond merely playing the right notes at the right time. We hear when an ensemble has truly agreed on what a piece means and how it should unfold.

Musical Courage

The willingness to take interpretive risks, to commit fully to a musical idea, and to be vulnerable in front of an audience. Safe playing never wins. We want to hear ensembles that dare.

Our Belief

Chamber Music Without Borders

The traditional path for young chamber ensembles runs through a handful of prestigious competitions in a handful of cities. Travel costs, visa complexities, and financial barriers mean that extraordinary ensembles from most of the world never get the chance to be heard by the jurors who could transform their careers.

The TGC Chamber Music Competition removes those barriers entirely. Submit your recording from wherever you rehearse. Be judged by the same internationally accomplished musicians who sit on the juries of the most renowned competitions. Receive coaching and mentorship that would normally require relocation to a major conservatory city.

Geography should never determine which ensembles the world gets to hear.

The best quartet in the world might be rehearsing in a room you've never heard of. We intend to find them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Your Ensemble Needs to Know

For the video submission round, all ensemble members must be physically present in the same room, performing together. However, your members can reside in different countries between rounds. For the Live Virtual Finals, each member can stream from their own location if the ensemble prefers, though performing together in one space is strongly encouraged for musical reasons.
A single stationary camera that captures all players clearly. A smartphone on a tripod works perfectly well. The camera should remain in a fixed position for the entire recording — no panning, zooming, or camera movement. Good audio quality matters more than video resolution, but both should be clear enough for the jury to see and hear all players. Detailed technical specifications will be published with the full competition guidelines.
Absolutely. Contemporary repertoire is not just accepted — it's encouraged. We ask that at least one of your two contrasting works comes from the standard repertoire, but the second can be from any era, including brand-new compositions. If you're performing a recently composed work, please include the composer's name and the year of composition. World premieres are welcome.
Any combination that doesn't fit the standard ensemble formats. Guitar and strings, accordion with winds, percussion ensemble, ensembles that include electronics — all are welcome. We believe the chamber music tradition is alive and expanding. If your ensemble makes music together with a shared sense of purpose and communication, it belongs in this competition.
We understand that ensemble membership can sometimes change. If a member must be replaced due to extraordinary circumstances, contact us as soon as possible. Substitutions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The identity of the ensemble is important to us, and frequent or casual substitutions may affect your eligibility.
All members must be between 16 and 35 years of age at the time of the submission deadline. This is a firm requirement and applies to every member of the ensemble. The age range is designed to support emerging artists who are building their chamber music careers. Members under 18 require parental or guardian consent.
No. Music stands and scores are perfectly acceptable. Chamber music is traditionally performed with scores, and we respect that tradition. Whether you play from memory or from the page is entirely up to your ensemble. The jury will evaluate your musical communication and interpretation, not whether you've memorized the notes.
Yes, as long as the recording meets our technical requirements (single camera, unedited, all players visible). The recording does not need to be made exclusively for this competition. However, it must have been recorded within the 12 months preceding the submission deadline.
Semifinalists perform live in a streamed concert format, broadcast to a global audience. The jury evaluates in real time, and the audience votes for the Audience Favorite award. Ensembles will perform a prepared program of 20–30 minutes. Technical support and sound check sessions will be provided in advance to ensure the best possible stream quality.
All finalists receive personalized coaching sessions with members of the jury. These are not brief feedback sessions — they are substantive working rehearsals where jury members share their expertise on repertoire, ensemble technique, career development, and musical interpretation. For the Grand Prize winner, these sessions extend into an ongoing mentorship relationship.
