Musical Theatre Creation
Write the shows that move audiences. Master the craft of book writing, lyric writing, and composition for the stage — from concept development through production-ready scripts and scores.
Where Story Meets Song
Musical theatre is the most demanding form of dramatic writing. It requires mastery of book craft, lyric writing, and musical composition — and the rare ability to weave them into a seamless whole that serves the story.
This diploma teaches you to write musicals from the inside out. You'll develop skills in dramatic structure, character-driven songwriting, and the unique conventions that make theatre music work on stage. Whether you're a composer learning to write books, a playwright learning to write songs, or a triple-threat developing all three — this program meets you where you are.
"The best musicals don't have songs that interrupt the story — they have songs that ARE the story. Learning to write at that level is what this program is about."
By program's end, you'll have developed significant material for an original musical and the skills to complete it.

Frequently Asked
No. The program develops all three skills, but you'll naturally focus on your strengths. Many successful musicals are written by teams. The goal is understanding how all elements work together — whether you write everything yourself or collaborate with partners who complement your abilities.
Basic music literacy is helpful but not required for enrollment. If you're primarily a book writer or lyricist, you'll learn to think musically and collaborate effectively with composers. If you want to compose, we can recommend preparatory resources before the program begins.
Your project can be an original story or an adaptation. If adapting, you're responsible for understanding rights issues. We cover adaptation as a specific skill — transforming source material into a form that works as a musical is its own art. Many classic musicals are adaptations.
The goal is substantial material — typically a complete first act or 5-7 songs with book scenes. Completing a full musical takes longer than any program can provide. You'll graduate with a clear roadmap and the skills to finish, plus professional feedback on your work.
Yes. The capstone includes a reading of your material with performers. Throughout the program, you'll hear your songs performed in workshops. There's no substitute for hearing your work with voices — it reveals what's working and what needs revision.
