American Heritage

A tradition forged in service & excellence

The United States fields some of the most respected military musical organizations in the world. Understanding their history, standards, and culture is essential to earning a place among their ranks.

"The President's Own"

United States Marine Band

Established by Congress in 1798, the Marine Band is the oldest professional musical organization in the United States. Thomas Jefferson gave it the title "The President's Own." Under the legendary direction of John Philip Sousa (1880-1892), the band became a national institution and defined the American march tradition.

"Pershing's Own"

United States Army Band

Originating from General John J. Pershing's vision in the early 1920s, the Army fields 87 bands across active duty, reserve, and National Guard components. During the Battle of the Bulge, members of the 28th Infantry Division Band put away their instruments, dug foxholes, and picked up carbines to defend their position.

United States Navy Band

Washington Navy Yard

Formally established in 1925, the Navy Band comprises 172 enlisted musicians and six performing ensembles including the Concert Band, Ceremonial Band, Sea Chanters chorus, and the Commodores jazz ensemble. Its roots trace back to the drumming and sea shanty traditions of early naval service.

United States Air Force Band

Bolling Air Force Base

Built on the legacy of Glenn Miller's Army Air Forces Band during WWII, the Air Force Band fields six ensembles including the Airmen of Note jazz band and the Singing Sergeants. The first overseas tour was performed in 1944 across England and France.

United States Coast Guard Band

New London, Connecticut

Founded in 1925 through the efforts of John Philip Sousa and Walter Damrosch of the New York Philharmonic, the Coast Guard Band is the only official musical organization of the U.S. Coast Guard. It maintains full concert, ceremonial, and chamber capabilities.

Premier Ensemble Standards

The Highest Level

Ten U.S. military bands hold premier status. Members are selected through competitive auditions, often drawn from top conservatories and schools of music. New enlistees in most premier ensembles enter at the E-6 pay grade, reflecting the professional caliber expected.

The U.S. Armed Forces field more than 100 active-duty and reserve bands across all branches, supporting state arrivals, military funerals, ship commissionings, change of command ceremonies, and public engagement. American military band history dates to 1653 with the New Hampshire militia, making it one of the oldest musical traditions in the nation.
