Injury Prevention

Your career is a long game—train like it. Playing-related disorders are widely reported; prevention beats intervention.

Not treatment. Not therapy.
Systems that prevent the problem in the first place.

Playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) are widely reported in musicians, with prevalence varying across studies and settings. Systematic reviews consistently document high rates of pain, discomfort, and injury among professional and student musicians. Prevention is always more effective than treatment.

We apply sports medicine principles to musician contexts: load management, warm-up architecture, ergonomics, microbreak systems, and early warning protocols. These are the same approaches used with elite athletes, adapted for the specific demands of musical practice and performance.

We teach prevention strategies—we do not diagnose or treat injuries. For active injuries or pain, seek evaluation from physical therapists, physicians, or appropriate specialists.

Playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) are widely reported among musicians across instruments and settings. Studies consistently find that a majority of professional musicians experience performance-related pain. Risk factors include practice load, poor posture, insufficient warm-up, and inadequate recovery. Evidence supports the effectiveness of warm-up protocols, load management, ergonomic assessment, and body awareness training in reducing injury incidence.

We cite research where it exists and are transparent where evidence is emerging. We never overstate findings or present preliminary results as settled science.

Who Benefits

📈

Audition Ramp-Ups & Seasons

Periods of intensified practice are highest-risk. We help you manage load during demanding times.

🔄

Recurring Pain Patterns

If you've been hurt before and worry about re-injury, we build systems to protect you going forward.

💪

Push-Through-Pain Culture

Conservatory culture sometimes normalizes pain. We teach a healthier, more sustainable approach.

🩹

Returning from Injury

After treatment, prevention systems help ensure you don't end up back in the clinic.

📝

No Structured Practice Architecture

If your approach is "until it's done" without thought to load, we design smarter systems.

Curriculum Modules

01

Load Management

Minutes, intensity, difficulty, deload

The foundation of injury prevention. Understanding how much is too much and when to pull back.

  • Practice time tracking
  • Intensity monitoring
  • Repertoire difficulty assessment
  • Deload scheduling
02

Warm-Up Structure

By instrument family

Preparing your body before loading it. Instrument-specific protocols.

  • General body warm-up
  • Instrument-specific prep
  • Gradual load increase
  • Pre-rehearsal routines
03

Microbreak Systems

Protecting momentum while resting

Brief breaks that prevent accumulation of strain without losing focus.

  • Timed break protocols
  • Movement breaks
  • Eye rest for readers
  • Momentum maintenance
04

Ergonomics

Chair/stand/strap/screen setup

Your physical environment matters. Optimization for your specific instrument and setting.

  • Seating assessment
  • Stand positioning
  • Instrument support options
  • Screen and music placement
05

Early Warning System

Pain rules and escalation

Knowing when something is wrong before it becomes serious. Red flags and action steps.

  • Pain recognition
  • Severity assessment
  • When to stop
  • When to seek care
06

Deload Weeks

Strategic recovery periods

Building rest into your schedule intentionally, not just hoping for it.

  • Planning recovery weeks
  • Reduced load strategies
  • Active recovery options
  • Return-to-load protocols

Your Deliverables

📅

Weekly Practice Plan

Plus performance-week protocol. Structured load management for sustainable practice.

Warm-Up / Reset / Recovery Checklist

Daily-use reference for your complete practice hygiene routine.

🚨

Personal Escalation Protocol

When to modify, when to rest, when to seek professional care.

Frequently Asked

No. We teach prevention and load management. For diagnosis and treatment, see a physical therapist, physician, or appropriate specialist.
We can teach load management principles, but active injuries need clinical evaluation first. We help prevent problems and prevent recurrence.
We can help you plan load management for high-stakes periods. But we cannot clear injuries or provide medical advice about performing through pain.
We apply sports medicine principles to musician contexts but do not provide medical care. Think coaching for sustainable practice, not treatment.
Absolutely. The best time to address injury prevention is before problems develop. Many musicians only seek help after pain has already disrupted their playing. We teach you to identify early warning signs, manage practice load, and build warm-up and recovery routines that protect your career long-term.
We teach prevention and education—load management, warm-up architecture, ergonomic awareness, and early warning recognition. Physical therapy treats diagnosed conditions and injuries. If you have an active injury, see a physical therapist. We help you prevent the next one.
