Feldenkrais Method

More options equals less pain equals more artistry. Train the nervous system to move with choice, not habit.

Expanding your movement vocabulary.

The Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic education that works through the nervous system. Rather than imposing correct positions, it helps you discover more options for how to move—and when you have more options, you naturally choose more efficient, less painful patterns.

Developed by Moshé Feldenkrais, the method is taught in two formats: Awareness Through Movement (ATM), verbally guided group lessons, and Functional Integration (FI), hands-on individual sessions. Both use gentle movement exploration to reveal habitual patterns and introduce alternatives.

Feldenkrais practitioner training commonly involves approximately 800 hours across multi-year programs. This is not weekend certification—it represents deep study of movement, learning, and the nervous system.

The Feldenkrais Method uses movement-based learning to improve coordination and reduce pain. While large-scale clinical trials are limited, existing research shows promising results for chronic pain, balance, and functional mobility. Musicians report improvements in ease of movement, reduced playing-related pain, and increased awareness of habitual patterns after Feldenkrais training.

We cite research where it exists and are transparent where evidence is emerging. We never overstate findings or present preliminary results as settled science.

Who Benefits

🔄

Chronic Tension Cycles

If tension keeps returning despite your efforts, or injury has changed how you move, Feldenkrais offers a different approach through the nervous system.

Technique Locks at Tempo

If you can play something slowly but it falls apart at speed, the issue may be unnecessary muscular co-contraction.

🛡

Fear of Pain, Guarded Movement

If you've become protective and cautious, Feldenkrais rebuilds confidence through safe exploration.

📊

Plateauing Despite Practice

Sometimes the obstacle isn't more practice but how you're practicing. New movement options can break through plateaus.

Wanting More Ease

Even without specific problems, Feldenkrais can reveal possibilities you didn't know existed.

Frequently Asked

ATM is group lessons with verbal guidance. FI is one-on-one with hands-on guidance—the practitioner moves you gently to communicate new possibilities.
Both are somatic education. Feldenkrais emphasizes movement exploration and discovering options; Alexander emphasizes inhibition and direction. Many musicians study both.
No. Feldenkrais benefits anyone wanting more ease and options in movement.
Many notice something different in the first lesson—often a sense of lightness or ease. Integration into playing develops over weeks and months.
Both are somatic education methods, but they use different approaches. Alexander Technique focuses on inhibition—learning to stop habitual interference patterns—primarily through hands-on guidance. Feldenkrais focuses on expanding movement options through gentle exploratory sequences. Some musicians benefit from one more than the other; some use both. We can help you determine which approach suits your needs.
Many Feldenkrais lessons involve lying on a mat, but the method adapts to any position. We can work sitting, standing, or at your instrument. If floor work is not accessible for you, we design the lesson accordingly.
