Why Interviews Matter

Your performance may get you through the door, but your ability to speak about your art often determines whether you stay. Top conservatories and music programs increasingly weigh interview performance alongside audition results.

Faculty want to understand who you are beyond your instrument — your musical philosophy, your goals, your ability to articulate ideas, and whether you'll be a collaborative member of their community. These conversations reveal artistic maturity in ways a performance alone cannot.

Avoid These Pitfalls

Common Interview Mistakes

Even talented musicians can undermine themselves in interviews. Here's what we help you avoid.

Generic "Why This School" Answers

Vague responses about "reputation" or "great faculty" that could apply anywhere.

Over-Rehearsed Responses

Answers that sound memorized rather than genuine and conversational.

Talking Too Long (or Too Short)

Rambling answers that lose focus or brief responses that seem unprepared.

Not Asking Questions

Missing the opportunity to demonstrate genuine interest and engagement.

Questions

Frequently Asked

How many mock interviews do I need?

Most students benefit from 3-5 mock interview sessions. This typically includes an initial assessment, focused skill-building sessions, and a final dress rehearsal. However, if you're particularly anxious about interviews or have specific challenges to address, additional sessions may be helpful.

Do you know what questions specific schools ask?

We maintain a database of interview questions reported by past applicants to major conservatories and music programs. While we can't guarantee what you'll be asked, we can prepare you for the types of questions faculty at your target schools tend to ask. We also research specific faculty interests to help you prepare for conversations with particular teachers.

Can you help with video interview recordings?

Absolutely. Some programs require recorded video interviews as part of their application. We help you prepare technically (camera setup, lighting, background) and strategically (pacing, delivery, responding to timed prompts). We can review draft recordings and provide feedback before you submit.

What if English isn't my first language?

We work with many international students navigating interviews in English. Our coaching addresses language-specific considerations, helps you find clear and natural ways to express complex ideas, and builds confidence in cross-cultural communication. We focus on clarity and authenticity rather than perfect grammar.

Is this different from Live Audition Prep?

Yes. Live Audition Prep focuses on your in-person performance skills — managing nerves, stage presence, dealing with performance conditions. Interview & Speaking Prep focuses specifically on verbal communication — answering questions, articulating your artistic vision, and conversational skills. Many students use both services together.

How do you handle anxiety about interviews?

Interview anxiety is normal and manageable. Our coaching includes specific techniques for managing nervousness — breathing exercises, reframing strategies, and practice under progressively realistic conditions. The more you practice in safe environments, the more confident you become in real interviews.

Your Voice Is Part of Your Artistry
