Tapio Tuomela (b. 1958) began his musical career as a pianist in the 1980s and as a conductor in the 1990s, completing master's programs at the Sibelius Academy in both disciplines. He continued at the Eastman School of Music (Master in Composition, 1990) and the University of the Arts Helsinki (Doctor in Composition, 2014), where he has served as lecturer of orchestration and composition since 2019.

Tuomela is best known for his vocal music and operas. His Kalevala-inspired Mothers and Daughters was commissioned by the Finnish National Opera, while his chamber opera Antti Puuhaara has been performed approximately 30 times at venues including the Bastille Opera Auditorium and Musee d'Orsay. His works have been featured at festivals such as World Music Days, Nordic Music Days, and Presences (Paris).

His catalog includes three symphonies, two concertos, and extensive choral and vocal works, with commissions from ensembles across Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia, and Russia. His music appears on approximately 15 CDs, and his pieces have been selected by the UNESCO Rostrum for Composers twice.

Tuomela served as Artistic Director of Time of Music Festival (2000-2008) and has led composer workshops across Europe. He has worked with the Society of Finnish Composers as both executive manager and chairman of the board.
