Virtual Summer
Chamber Music Intensive
Two weeks of immersive ensemble work, daily coaching, and a culminating virtual recital — all from wherever you are in the world.
About the Program
The Virtual Summer Chamber Music Intensive brings together instrumentalists and pianists from around the globe for two weeks of focused, transformative ensemble work. You will be carefully matched with an ensemble of peers at your level, coached daily by distinguished chamber musicians, and guided through the process of preparing and performing a complete program of repertoire.
This is not a passive listening experience. From the first day, you will rehearse, receive individual and group coaching, study repertoire in depth, and develop the communication and listening skills that define great chamber music. The intensive culminates in a virtual recital — a polished performance streamed live to an audience of family, friends, and the broader TGC community.
Whether you dream of a career in chamber music or simply want to deepen your ensemble skills, this program offers an unparalleled opportunity to grow as a musician and collaborator in a supportive, international community.
Program Structure
Two carefully designed weeks that take you from first rehearsal to final performance.
Foundations & Discovery
Ensemble Matching
You will be placed into an ensemble based on your instrument, level, repertoire preferences, and musical goals. Our faculty take care to build groups where every member can thrive and contribute.
Daily Coaching Sessions
Each ensemble receives a dedicated daily coaching session with a faculty member. These sessions focus on intonation, balance, phrasing, ensemble communication, and the art of listening deeply to your partners.
Repertoire Study
Alongside rehearsals, you will participate in guided repertoire study sessions that explore the historical, structural, and interpretive dimensions of your chosen works. Understanding context transforms performance.
Masterclasses
Daily masterclasses with guest artists expose you to a range of perspectives on chamber performance. Watch, listen, and learn as peers perform and receive coaching in real time.
Performance & Refinement
Performance Preparation
The second week shifts focus to performance readiness. Rehearsals become run-throughs. Coaching zeroes in on the details that separate a good performance from an exceptional one — pacing, stage presence, and musical conviction.
Mock Concerts
Mid-week mock concerts simulate the experience of performing for an audience. Receive feedback from faculty and peers in a low-pressure setting, refine your program order, and build the confidence you need for the final recital.
Recording & Tech Preparation
Our production team guides you through optimizing your audio and video setup for the best possible recital experience. Learn techniques for recording chamber music remotely that you can use long after the program ends.
Final Virtual Recital
The program culminates in a live-streamed virtual recital featuring every ensemble. Perform your polished program for an audience of fellow participants, faculty, family, and friends — a celebration of two weeks of extraordinary work.
A Typical Day
Every day is designed to balance focused work with creative exploration and community connection.
Sectional Rehearsal
Begin each day with a focused sectional or full ensemble rehearsal. This is your dedicated time to work through passages, refine intonation, and develop the ensemble's shared musical voice without outside input — the essential work that makes coaching sessions productive.
Masterclass with Guest Artist
A daily masterclass brings a distinguished guest artist into the virtual studio. Selected ensembles perform and receive live coaching while all participants observe and learn. These sessions expose you to diverse artistic perspectives and performance traditions from around the world.
Ensemble Coaching
Your ensemble meets with its assigned faculty coach for an intensive session focused on your current repertoire. Expect detailed work on phrasing, balance, tempo, and communication — the craft of making music together at the highest level.
Open Rehearsal & Performance
Evenings offer an informal setting for open rehearsals, play-throughs, and peer listening sessions. Share works-in-progress, experiment with interpretation, and enjoy the camaraderie of a global community of chamber musicians united by a shared love of the art form.
Repertoire Focus
Our repertoire spans the full breadth of the chamber music canon — from the cornerstone works of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven through the Romantic masterpieces of Brahms, Dvorak, and Schumann, to the adventurous voices of Ravel, Bartok, Shostakovich, and beyond.
We are equally committed to contemporary music. Each ensemble is encouraged to include at least one work by a living composer in their program, and we actively program works by underrepresented voices in the chamber repertoire.
Participant input is welcomed and valued. During the application and matching process, you will have the opportunity to express repertoire preferences, suggest specific works, and indicate pieces you have always wanted to explore. Our faculty work with each ensemble to build a program that is challenging, rewarding, and personally meaningful to every member.
Repertoire Highlights
- Standard string quartet, piano trio, and wind quintet literature
- Mixed ensembles and less common instrumentations
- Works by living and underrepresented composers
- Participant-suggested repertoire
- Arrangements and new commissions (when available)
Who Should Apply
Instrumentalists & Pianists
String, wind, brass, and keyboard players with intermediate to advanced proficiency are welcome. You should be comfortable preparing and performing chamber repertoire at a level appropriate to your experience — our faculty will guide you from there.
Ages 16 and Up
There is no upper age limit. We welcome pre-college students, university musicians, adult amateurs, and returning players alike. What matters is your commitment to the art of chamber music and your eagerness to grow within an ensemble.
Comfortable with Video Performance
Because the program is fully virtual, you should be comfortable performing on camera and have access to a reliable internet connection, a quiet practice space, and basic audio/video equipment (external microphone and headphones recommended).
Collaborative Spirit
Chamber music is, above all, a conversation. We look for musicians who listen as intensely as they play, who embrace diverse perspectives, and who are excited to build something extraordinary with new partners from around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are ensembles matched?
Ensembles are formed by our faculty based on a combination of factors: instrument, playing level, repertoire preferences, musical goals, and availability. We take great care to build groups where every member can contribute meaningfully and grow. You will have the opportunity to indicate preferences during the registration and application process.
What instruments are accepted?
We welcome all standard chamber music instruments including violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, and more. If your instrument is less common in the chamber repertoire, we encourage you to apply — we will do our best to find or create an ensemble setting that works for you.
What level do I need to be?
We welcome intermediate to advanced players. You should be comfortable reading and preparing chamber music parts independently, maintaining a steady tempo, and performing for others. You do not need to be a professional or conservatory student — dedicated amateurs with solid fundamentals thrive in this program.
How much practice time is expected daily?
Plan for approximately four to five hours of structured program activity each day (rehearsals, coaching, masterclasses), plus individual practice time. We recommend setting aside at least one to two additional hours daily for personal preparation. The program is intensive by design — that is what makes the progress so remarkable.
Can I choose my repertoire?
Yes, participant input is an important part of the repertoire selection process. During registration, you can suggest specific works or composers you would like to explore. Our faculty will work with each ensemble to build a program that balances participant preferences with pedagogical goals and the strengths of the group.
What technology do I need?
You will need a computer with a stable internet connection, a webcam, and headphones. An external microphone is strongly recommended for the best audio quality during rehearsals and the final recital. Our production team will provide guidance on optimizing your setup before the program begins.
Is the final recital recorded?
Yes. The final virtual recital is live-streamed and recorded. All participants receive a high-quality recording of their performance, which you are welcome to use for portfolios, audition materials, or personal enjoyment. Recordings are typically delivered within two weeks of the program's conclusion.
Can I participate from any country?
Absolutely. The program is open to participants worldwide. Live sessions are scheduled with global accessibility in mind (typically centered on U.S. Eastern time), and we make every effort to accommodate participants across multiple time zones. Asynchronous materials are also provided to supplement live activities.
